Katy Cruel [No. 5 from The Golden Peacock]

based on an 18th-century American Marching Song
By Robert Dennis
SSATTB Chorus, a cappella
392-02553

In 1986 the vocal ensemble The Western Wind asked me to compose a one-minute version of their namesake song, the 16th-century English O Western Wind, to be used as theme music for their National Public Radio program “The Western Wind On The Air.”  From this grew the idea to write a group of settings of “older” folk songs.  Katy Cruel, the last in a set of five, was a popular marching tune in 18th-century New England.
